Monday, June 3. Present: The Mayor (Jdr T. H. Brewer), I and Councillors Martin. Kennedy, Gibb), i Philp, Poppelwell, and (^nody. OORBE3PONDENCE. The Land and Survey Department, Wellington, wrote in answer to the Council's application, regretting tint the plan attached to Commissioner Hawkins' report re traffic bridge could not ba returned to tha Council, "as it is one of the documents on which the proclamation authorising the construction of the bridge was based, and the Government is advised that it should be kept witb the other papers relating thereto, in case of any question "arising thereto."—Received. The Deputy Official Assignee, luverc*r-ill, intimated that as Mr James Moßwan had purchased all the assata in McAllister's estate, he now had no claim against any contract taken by the bankrupt from the * Council.—Received. Wm, Henderson, on behalf of Wrs J»hnk Hoffman, drew attention to the bad state of|f Maitland street, Kaßt Gore, in front of the ■' property occupied by her. J.t had been very badly cut up by carters conveying gravel for the County Council and Enapdale fioad Board. She was willing to provide gravel at Borough contract rates, if the Council would put on a surfaceman to spread it.— Beferred to the Works Committee, with ■-;£ power to act. '% The Southland County Counoil intimated " that there was no objection to the Gort Traffic Bridge plans being left at the County offices.—Received. A circular was received from ihe League for the Promotion and Development of Goldmining. David McDougali wrote, making nov*l suggestions how to treat stray cattle.— Received. D. Sullivan demanded L 7 15s 6d, balance due on contract and extra labor in Bast Ward, and threatening legal proceedings if it was not paid at once.—The Mayor said this was rather a fharp communication to receive from one of their contractors. It certainly was not discreet conduct. Be moved that payment be made on Sullfaan fnrnishing the Finance Committee «£< details, and the Engineers certificate betog produced.—Seconded by Councillor Kennedy and carried. Wm. Henderson, on behalf of James MoEwan (who had purchased the assets in McAllister's estate) requested that either McEwan or McAllister be permitted to continue the Borough's gravelling contract, let to McAllister for the current year. Mr McEwan would give security for the continuance and completion of the work. He enclosed a letter from the Deputy Official Assignee, Invercargill.—Agreed to. James Stark, secretary to Gore Brass Band, asked for a rebate in the usual charge for the use of the Town Mall.—The Mayor said the Volunteers had the use of the ba'l ' at a very nominal charge, just sufficient to pay for the lighting $ and as the Band was a purely local institution, he favored a reduction in the usual charge for the Band's dancing socials (30s) being made.—Coun* oillor Martin moved that the Band be granted the hall for the actual cost of the light.—Councillor Gibbs seconded.—Conn* ■ ciilor Kennedy moved as an amendment, that the matter be referred to the Finance Committee, with power le act.—Councillor Poppelwell seconded, because, although he was in favor of meeting the Band in every possible way, they h»d the ratepayers to consider.—Councillor Philp oould not see why so Bimple a matter oould not be settled there and then. Everything nowadays was referred to a committee.—The Mayor favored the amendment, and on being put, it was carried, Councillor Philp alone dissenting. Ths Works Committee recommended : (1) That a footpath be formed in Mary street for a distance of about 24 chains, between the two creek", the water-table thus made would drain oft the surface-water and afford better accommodation for foot traffic. (2) That two cesspools be constructed on the drain known as Cameron's from Surrey to Denton streets, and about 25 loads of gravel put on the road between those, two streets. (3) Having examined the iiv£ bed where the Railway Department proposed to con* struct a siding, they recommended (althotah aware they could not prevent the\ Department from taking gravel therefrom), that in view of possible damage snch a siding would cause to horse and dray traffic, its site being so near the present bridge, with its narrow approaches, and, further, in view of a new crossing eventually being made ovef the , railway from River to Denton streets, to connect with the new bridge, they are of opinion that a conference with the Railway Engineer in desirable before anything farther fs done. (4) The Committee would report on the proposed erection of lamps in Ashton and Gorton streets at next meeting of Council.—Adopted, after Councillor Gibbs had drawn the Committee's attention to the very bad state of the road leading np Cemetery HillThe following accounts were passed for

B^4 The Finance Committee also recommended that the Southland County Counoil bo asked to explain the discrepancy beiween the amount paid to them re licensing expenses and the returns made by them to the Colonial Secretary.—ln this connection the Mayor explained that at last Licensing Election the Borough was charged by the County the sum of L 72 as its share of the cost, but the return from the Colonial Secretary showed that only 1.61 was credited as having been paid by the Borough, The Mayor reported that the Lighting Committse would furnish their report on theelectric lamps at next meeting. The moonlight had prevented them doing so at tbirf) meeting. '' X* It was resolved, on the motion of y Councillor Martia, that the sum of L 6 16s, arrears of rent due five years on section 2, block 15, ba written off as irrecoverable, He explained that the section was now occupied by Mr A. Donaldson, and previously by the late Mr G. F. Allen, but the arretftg were previously contracted,by one Jefferson, who went bankrupt. Councillors Martin and Poppelwell were. . appointed to sign the rate roll. .
