The annual horse parade was held in Tapanui on Saturday last, when a very ,f air number of entires put in an appearaDce. The day being an exceptionally fine one, all the animals shown looked their best. The Tapanui Farmers' Club (through their committee of Messrs Chas. McDonald, W. Abram and Geo. Russell) awarded the Club's premium to St. Alexander, the property of Mr J. R. Mackenzie, of Glenkenich Station. Amongst the "knowing ones" at the parade a great amount of talk was indulged in as to the respective merits of the different horses. Our Kelso horse, Salisbury's Champion (the property of Mr Dunn«tt), was, generally speaking, very highly spoken of; as also Bismarck, who ii undoubtedly a splendid animal, and one likely from his own performances and pedigree to make his mark in tbe colony, iofty, the property of Mr Jas. Anderson, is probably the makings of 83 good a horse as was shown on Saturday, bat, being low in condition, did not show to that advantage the others did. Richmond, Prince Charlie and Lord Granbourne have all proved themselves good horses, and will doubtless get a fair share of patronage for the season. Reverting to St. Alexander, the owner is to be complimented indeed in again having a horße pronounced the best by such wellknown, judges of horseflesh as the gentlemen above alluded to. In thoroughbreds Bon Pedro, Rouser and Ironworker were en evidence, and evinced by their good looks the care and attention bestowed upon them by their respective owners. In writing of entires I may mention that pedigree cards of all horses advertised in this paper may be seen at the branch office of the Ensign, Kelso. Through the kind invitation of the lecretary (M> Chas. Whelan) I attended on Friday last the Loyal Tapanui Lodge of Oddfellows' ball. At about 9 p.m. the "brave and fair*' of tho district were well represented in the grand march, some 40 couples taking part. Oaring the evening Bro. Whelan, in a neat and happy addreßs; alluded to the prosperous condition of the bdge, mingling nis words with feelings of keenest pathos when touohing the death of Bister Simmonds and other?. Presentations of certificates during the evening were made to Brothers T. Jenkins, J. Jenkins, P. Sim, and H. Simmonds. Music was supplied by the Tapanui String Band, and was of fair order of merit. The- innar man was well looked after with heavily laden tray * of eatables and drinkables. Mr John Jenkins acted the cart of M.C. with that gentleman's ÜBUaf ability. I was about to write •boat the ladies' dresses, but — never again, Sir, no never ! I hardly dare now aay they all looked charming, but they did, bless 'em.
