LAKE ROTORUA RISING
Auckland, Oct 23. Intelligence has been received from Rotorua that the Like is higher than previously known aod is still rising. Considerable damage will be done.
Wellington, Oct. 23. The Government have received no information of a rise in Lake Rotorua. The Government agent at Roloru* was instructed by the Native Minister some time ago to report if there was any change in the depth of the water, and about a week ago information was sent to Wellington that the Lake was falling. Mr Ballance has telegraphed to H, A Gordon, Inspecting Engineer of the Mines Department, who is at present in the district, to ascertain the exact position of affairs and wire the result of his investigations. If the Lake rises to any extent a large volume of water can be run into Lake Rotoiti at a cost of about LSO.
INTERPROVINdAL CHESS MATCH Christchurch, Oot 24. A telegraphic chess match between Otago and Canterbnry ten players aside, began last night. O'ago is capt ained by Mr Hay and Canterbury by Mr Hookham No game was decided, but at one of the boards Mr Acton Adams for Canterbury, has a slight advantage over Mr Christie, of Dunedin.
