THE GAME OF BOWLS
HINTS FfOR BOWLERS ' -■ s' " Mr. Measurer. —You are the first mate of the; crew. ; When - the captain is down below, you ’ are on the bridge. .When he takes over, your authority ends. Naturally, he will consult you when in doubt, and respect your advice, but if he takes orders from you or anybody .else, he is too weak for team responsibility. The third who bullies his skip is often a rabid martinet when his turncomes on the deck. Your mission at the mat-end is keeping your side in; good spirits, and giving it confidence. As the general utility man of theside you will he asked to play every shot in the book, which is quite enough for one man without worrying about what the skip is up to. Mr. Skip.—Most bowlers have the idea that only players of ripe experience and extraordinary ability ever rise to the giddy heights of skipperdon. Unless you are a very superior person, you know skipping, is not all bliss. You are supposed to be the brains of the team, so keep your men off tricky hands; try a little, but not too much, finesse, control the lay-out of each head, and, by example, keep your men tuned up to concert pitch. Whatever you are left to do, strive to come up to expectations, but have the- self-reliance to follow your own convictions. A skip should always , be judged by the effect he has on his men, and also on the other side. If you can get the best out of your own men, and plan so that your opponent can’t get the best out of his, you are a skipper; if you can’t, you are only a sort of rink caretaker.
