FARMERS AND CARRIERS
RECENT AGREEMENT Undercutting Alleged .Reference was made at Friday’s meeting of the Matamata Farmers’ Union to the fact that the president of the Matamata Carriers’ Association was alleged to be under-cutting . another member in cartage charges. Mr. H. Sutherland, vice-president, ,* who had assisted to secure what has been termed the model agreement between Matamata farmers and carriers, asked how the branch stood in the matter. In the agreement with the Carriers’ Agency the branch agreed to stand by the charges which had been fixed at the conference with the carriers. Was the branch now to get other carriers to undercut and so | “ bust ” the whole agreement. After making a statement in committee, the president stated that permission had been given to the president by the Carriers’ Association to endeavour to save his business, which had been undercut. It was a difficult situation and he did not know what they could do in the matter. Mr. P. R. Hawke also gave a statement in committee which touched on the attitude of the Hinuera Co-opera-tive Dairy Company. The president said that it was a pity carriers did not get together and settle their differences and join up with the-association. Mr. Sutherland said that the position was so complicated that it did not seem the branch could conclude another agreement with the carriers when the present one ran out. Mr. Hawke emphasised that he did not side with either party. He hoped both could come together and join up and so get a stable association. No action was taken.
