GOLDEN BOBBY CALF!
PRICE UP TO £1 PAID J ; ' ''V* To Matamata Farmers A keen “ px*ice war n between, firms buying bobby calves has developed in the Matamata district during the past ten days. At the week-end £1 was paid forone calf. The prices have risen by easy stages to an average of 10s and 12s 6d, although in one sector around Buckland road the jump was from 5s 6d to 14s or 15s. During the past few days, although one firm was reported to have dropped out, the price ■ continued to rise until the high price recorded was reached, in one instance. Payments of 14s to 16s have been common. The sudden increase has been an exceptional windfall for farmers’ wives, as most of these have collect- . ed bobby calf money in the past. It is stated that the increase in price is confined to the district and has not taken place in . other dairying centres. In some routes in the Matamata district the price has risen so rapidly that agents have run short of money (cash is always paid at the gates), and 1.0.U.’s have had to be left. An estimate paces the number of calves railed from Matamata to date at about 3000. Calves are also railed from Hinuera, Tirau, Waharoa and Walton.
