MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

JULY MEETING The July meeting of the Matamata County Council was held on Thursday when the chairman, Mr. J. W. Anderson, presided over Crs. J. Bruce, K. S. Cox, P. Dee, P. B. Hawke, G. A. Pearce, J. Pohlen, J. W. Tims, A. Wallace and E. D. White. Requests for Better Access Settlers on Hildreth road, Pukeatua, wrote requesting efforts be made to make this road at least passable. At present it was in a “ terrible state,” being hardly possible to walk down. Cream had to be carted to the Arapuni road, thus requiring unreasonable extra labour. The road was in Cr. Pearce’s riding, who said the possibility of sanding had been discussed before. It was certainly in a bad state, but it was a clay road and little could be done this year.

•Car, White thought it was a road really deserving attention. A number of settlers used it, and the council should give it an all-weather surface as soon as possible. The engineer estimated the cost at £4BO. If done by the Public Works Department the more " r extensive works, which would then be carried out would cost perhaps twice this sum, but half the cost would be returned to the council.

Cr. Hawke thought there was, therefore, no reason not to do this, but the engineer stated this year’s list of works for the Public Works Department was already full.

>Cr. Pearce stated it would be straightforward work with no swamps or culverts. Shingle would have to be carted five miles. Cr. Cox drew attention to the increase in costs through increased wages.

On the chairman’s motion it was decided to promise to do the best possible in the coming season. Cr. Pearce was asked to keep the matter before the council. A settler on Clinkard’s road, Mamaku, complained that it was almost impossible to get cream out along his road, which was in a very bad condition. No work but his own had been done upon it for some years past.

It was reported that much of this road lay in the Rotorua county and that all rates from the road were paid to the Main Highways Board. The matter was not proceeded With.
