Special thanks were due to Mrs. Newsome for her assistance in the kitchen. The roll call, which was “The part I liked best in the ‘Husband’s Evening,’ ” proved all tastes had been well catered for. , A community sing-song, led by Mrs. Given, was very enjoyable, and showed Mrs. Ryan, in a frisky mood, as a born conductor. The lecturer arranged for the afternoon was unable to be present, f and Mrs. Gunn kindly took his place and gave an interesting demonstration on “ smocking.” On the call of Mrs. Cubis a vote of thanks was i passed to Mrs. Gunn. | The writing competition was won by Miss Hill. j Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Wilson and Barker, Misses Clarke and G. j Given. WALTON. Over sixty ladies were present at the July meeting of the Walton Women’s Institute which was held on Tuesday. Mrs. C. Given presided. Mrs. M. F. Barlow gave an interesting demonstration of papier mache work, ' having several . fine samples of home-made bowls, etc., on exhibition. Mrs. Barlow explained that old newspapers were used, these being torn up into fairly small pieces and mixed with a flour paste. After thorough mixing the compound was left for four days, being stirred occasionally, and then it was ready for use. The moulds w r ere well smeared with vaseline, and after the compound had been pressed to the desired shape, it was left to dry. With experience the drying process could be hastened. The finish was put on to suit by means of paint and varnish. Mrs. Barlow was cordially thanked for her interesting address.

A competition for the best article made out of a flour bag produced some fifteen entries, which showed the remarkable ingenuity of the makers. The winners were Mrs. Groube and Mrs. Mack Johnston, the former showing a baby’s overall and the latter a coat. In a competition for scones the winners were Mrs. Todd and Mrs. R. Groube. Mrs. W. P. Ryan acted as judge for both competitions, and was heartily thanked for her work. The question of holding a stall at the Waikato Show was deferred till a later meeting.
