ROCKY DOWNS CLUB.

Men’s Championship Results.

In the semi-finals played last Saturday under perfect weather conditions, F. Woodhouse gained a surprise win over J. Barker 2 up, while N. Johnston beat K. Dods 2 and 1. Woodhouse and Johnston will now meet in the final over 35 holes, and as Johnston was defeated by Barker in the intermediate division, a very close game should result.

In the Johnston-Dods match the former gained an early lead by winning the first five holes by the odd stroke. Dods won the sixth, but lost the seventh, ninth and tenth holes, and was seven down. He, however, made a wonderful recovery by winning five of the next six holes, but the end came at the seventeenth, which Johnston by halving won the match 2 and 1.

F. Woodhouse, in his match with Barker, lost the first hole, but won the second, third, fourth, sixth and eighth, and turned 3 up. Barker, by winning the tenth, eleventh, thirteenth and fourteenth, brought the match square. Woodhouse won the fifteenth to again take the lead, but lost his advantage at the sixteenth, j the match been again square at the seventeenth. Barker was stymied, and instead of playing for a half, went for the hole, knocked his opponent in and made him dormie one. Woodhouse then won the eighteenth and the match 2 up. j The finalists in the various grades are:—Senior: Little v. Corbett. Intermediate: Keane v. winner of Barker and Casey. Junior : Woodhouse v. N. Johnston These matches will be played over 36 holes at an early date. GLENFARNE CUP RESULTS. Several cup matches were played last Saturday and during the weekend, with the following results: - Second Round. Hemphill beat Wallace (2), 3 and 2; Fitzgerald beat Kibblewhite (9), 3 and 2. Third Round.—Dr. Abernethy (9) beat Hemphill, 3 and 2; Casey beat Woodhouse (3), 3 and 1; Keeley beat Carruthers, senr. (11), 6 and 5; Mentiplay beat Crabb (14), 6 and 4; Darragh (11) beat Fitzgerald, 4 and 3.

The following matches will be played next Saturday:— Dr. Abernethy v. W. Casey, H. Keeley v. R. Mentiplay, W. L. Barkman v. N. Johnston, W. Heyworth v. J. Johnstone.

This competition is creating a lot of interest, and the seniors are gradually being eliminated. It looks as if Dr. Abernethy or W. Casey in the top half, and A. Darragh in the lower half, will be the finalists, although there may be some surprises in the quarter and semi-finals. MEDAL MATCH. An 18-hole medal handicap was played last Saturday in conjunction with the above matches, and Dr. Abernethy, with the nett score of 69, returned the best card. His handicap comes down one stroke. The best cards were : Dr. Abernethy, 96—27, 69; R. Mentiplay, 87—15, 72; A. Thomson, 91—19, 72; H. Keeley, 86—11, 75; W. L. Barkman, 99 —24, 75; C. G. Allan, 93 —18, 75; E. Wayte, 100—22, 78; A. Crabb, 113—34, 79. Several players were disqualified through playing with the wrong ball.

WEEK-END COMPETITION. The week-end competition was a four-ball best-ball bogey and the winners were: J. Corbett and E. Wayte 2 up, closely followed by W. Casey and Woodhouse 1 up, A. Thomson and Allan 1 up, K. Dods and N. Johnston 1 up, Keeley and Mentiplay all square, Wallace and Hutchison all square, Dr. Abernethy and Hemphill all square.

FLAG MATCH NEXT SATURDAY.

The competition next Saturday will be a flag match. Following is the draw for partners: Hemphill v. Corbett, Allan v. Fitzgerald, Little v. Buckley, Wayte v. Thomson, Carruthers, junr. v. Keane, Sherwin v. Wallace, Kibblewhite v. Carruthers, senr., Woodhouse v. Darragh, Spence v. Dods, Crabb v. Abernethy, Gelston v. Barker. PICNIC TOURNAMENT.

Excellent entries from Hamilton, Te Aroha, Te Awamutu, Okoroire, Putaruru, Walton and Morrinsville have been received for the club’s second annual picnic tournament next week-end. Several low handicap players have entered and competition, especially for the best gross score cup, should be very keen. There are to be four competitions on the day: An 18 hole medal handicap, an 18-hole bogey, a best nett score for 36 holes, and best gross score for 36 holes.

NOTES.

The player who carries the flag j furthest on Saturday in the flag i match will win Earl Johnston’s. trophy. The seniors have challenged the juniors to a teams match on handicap match play to be played in a week’s time. The 'seniors will, judging by Glenfarne Cup results, be “ shouting ” at the end of the day’s play. Inter-club matches are to be played against Te Aroha, at Te Aroha, on the 20th, and against Morrinsville, at Rocky Downs, on the 27th. The president’s trophies will be competed for on the 12th and 13th August. A sealed 9-hole medal and a sealed 9-hole bogey will be the competition. Mixed Canadian foursomes will be played on September 2, while the annual ladies v. men match will be played the following week. The ladies’ championships are well

advanced, and the semi-finals and finals are to be played at an early date. In the senior division Miss E. Johnston (holder) plays Miss Hogg in the final, while Mrs. Lamboume plays the winner of the Miss Nicholls v. Mrs. Keane match in the intermediate final. Several matches have yet to be played in the junior division.

LADIES’ MEDAL ROUND DRAW. Following is the draw for the medal round to be played on Saturday afternoon: Miss Hogg v. Miss Johnston, Miss McGeahan v. Miss Tierney, Miss N. Montague v. Miss Stonex, Miss H. Montague v. Miss McCrea, Miss Nicholls v. Mrs. Keane, Miss L. Wade v. Miss Turkington, Mrs. Wade v. Miss Maude, Miss B. Wade v. Miss Paterson, Miss B. Buchanan v. another.

LADIES’ MATCH.

Walton Beat Rocky Downs.

A match between the ladies of these clubs resulted in a win for Walton by one game. The results of the games were: Mrs. Dickey beat Mrs. Little, Miss Given beat Miss Montague, Mrs. Lock lost to Mrs. Lambourne, Mrs. Carter beat Miss Robinson, Mrs. Livingstone and Mrs. Alquist all square, Mrs. James beat Mrs. Kibblewhite, Mrs. Halligan lost to Mrs. Abernethy, Mrs. Hamblyn beat Mrs. Woodhouse, Miss Nicholls beat Mrs. Mentiplay, Miss Dickey lost to Mrs. Keeley.

WALTON CLUB.

LADIES’ JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP

The draw for the qualifying round of the junior championship, to be played in conjunction with the L.G.U. medal round, is as follows: — Mrs. James v. Mrs. Lock, Mrs. Bartleet v. C Grade.

The draw for the qualifying round of the C grade championship is as follows: Miss Martin v. Mrs. Ryan, Mrs. Belfield v. Mrs. W. Johnstone, Mrs. Leask v. Mrs. Jas. Given, Mrs. Wilson v. Miss Franklin, Mrs. Brooks v. Miss Hyndman, Mrs. Wills, Miss R. Hobart and Miss J. Hobart byes.

PLAY FOR LAURENSON VASE. The final of the Laurenson Vase competition, played between Mrs. James and Miss B. Payne, was won by the latter. Mrs. James conceded five strokes.

McLean Rose Bowl. The final round of the McLean Rose Bowl was played on Saturday. The results of three rounds were: — Mrs. Livingstone, 71, 71, 74, total 216. Other cards were: Miss D. Given, 78, 79, 79, total 236; Miss Swney, 77, 78, 86, total 241; Mrs. Lock, 76, 83, 84, total 243; Mrs. Dickey, 76, 82, 87, total 245.

CLUB NOTES. Several players are to be congratulated on reducing their handicap and others on gaining them. Mrs. Ingram returned a good card in the Rose Bowl competition, giving her a handicap of 32. In the C grade competition over three rounds Miss F. Franklin maintained her lead to win with an aggregate of 246. Mrs. J. Given came next with 261. '

Mrs. Hayward is another player who has shown marked improvement.

WALTON MEN. Draw for Championships. The draw for the first round of the championships to be played on Saturday is as follows : Adams v. Blythe, Crawford v. Dickey, N. Johnston v. H.
