OPPOSITION TO QUOTA.
FROM HINUERA SUPPLIERS
“ Will Be Disastrous to Us.” “If quotas are forced upon the Dominion the resuit will be disastrous/’ stated Mr. J. E. West, in the course of his remarks to Hinuera Dairy Company suppliers on Thursday.
Free Trade With Britain.
Mr. West said that the news from the Did Country on the subject during the last few weeks was anything but reassuring. The remedy, he thought, was to give British people the advantages they sought in our markets and he felt they would then not have to fear quotas.
They had to put their own house in order and reduce costs. If the price of butter rose at Home, then it simply meant making a market for margarine. They would have to approach the Government to assist the British manufacturer to a much greater extent than was done now. Views Before Tariff Commission. Mr. Phil Hawke held it was the duty of the dairying industry to place their views before the Tariff Commission. Farmers were losing the goodwill of the British people, and it was essential that they take every step to prevent the establishment of a quota. In his opinion they' should get a first-class man to represent the industry and place its views before the Commission now sitting. He had such a man in mind. He moved the company interest other companies with a view to putting the views of the dairying industry before the Tariff Commission.
“A Standing Disgrace.” Mr. J. Cotter seconded the motion. He pointed out, however, that no New Zealander expected that our exports would be limited so long as a pound of foreign butter entered England. While 49 per cent, of foreign butter entered England it was a standing disgrace to those who suggested that a limit should be put on the productive powers of the British Empire for them to advocate a quota. It appeared that such people were exploiting the loyalty of the Dominions. The outer portions of the Empire could profitably settle all of the unemployed in Britain. The resolution was then passed unanimously.
