TOWN BOARD CHANGES.

In Duties of the Staff. The question of whether the inspector to the Matamata Town .board, who had resigned, should be replaced, or his duues be partially spread over the present staff, was discussed at Monday's meeting of the Matamata Town board. The chairman introduced the subject by suggesting that a saving could be effected by distributing some of the duties carried out by Mr. Lilly amongst members of the present staff. Mr. A. E. Wrigley suggested that one of the staff could drive the rubbish lorry. Mr. G. G. Bell: What is your idea, Mr. .Chairman ? To distribute the various jobs amongst members of the staff?

The chairman explained that he had this in mind with the exception of the nightsoil. Mr. Bell said he was against putting extra work on the staff without extra pay. The clerk said the work would be done in the same time. Mr. Bell: That means a saving to the board of £2 10s a week. Mr. Y. B. Forbes said that in his opinion it could not be done with the present staff. They had their hands full at present. Mr. Wrigley thought it could be done with slight casual assistance. The foreman said he could cope with the traffic inspection, but if the collection of rubbish was also added to the permanent staff, a breakdown in the water service might result in a tangle. Mr. Forbes thought the nightsoil, rubbish collection and latrines could be put on to one man at £4 a week. Mr. Wrigley held that £3 12s 6d for _ four days was a good wage at present.

Mr. W. A. Gordon thought if they appointed a man temporarily and then called for applications it would meet the position. On the motion of Messrs. Forbes and Bell, it was decided to appoint Mr. Ebbett at £1 a night for three nights and 12s for one day, in each week.

The chairman said it was necessary to appoint a traffic inspector officially to give the necessary status,

On the motion of Messrs. Forbeg and Griffiths, Mr. W. A. 0. McEwan was appointed traffic inspector. On the motion of Messrs. Griffiths and Vincent, Mr. McEwan was also appointed dog inspector. In reply to Mr. Forbes, the chairman said that Mr. McEwan carried out these duties in the board’s time without extra pay.
