TARPAULIN “ BORROWED.”

CHARGE OF THEFT. Tirau Farmer’s Offence. At the Putaruru Magistrate’s. Court on Friday a Tirau farmer, John O’Loughlin, was charged with the theft of a tarpaulin from the Tirau railway station, the property of the New Zealand Government.

The police stated that the defendant was a farmer who had a particularly large pig which he wished to kill, but had nothing to scald it in. It was suggested by another farmer that he get a tarpaulin from the Railway Department, dig a hole in the ground and put the hot water in the tarpaulin. This action was taken and the tarpaulin was not returned. Defendant had sent someone else to get the tarpaulin and had given them half the pig. Defendant said he hung the cover on a fence after he had .finished with it and neglected to return it. It was in a bad state and was not worth much. The Magistrate said he should send accused to gaol, but it appeared that he did not intend to steal the article when he first took it.

O’Loughlin was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. He was also ordered to pay the Railway Department £l2 damages.
