A BIG TROUT.
“ LONG AS A BATTEN.” Illegal Bait Used. A “ tall ” fish story was heard at the Putaruru Magistrate’s Court on Friday, when Allan Hogarth was charged on the information of the ranger of the Auckland Acclimatisation Society with fishing with illegal bait.
The ranger stated that accused was fishing in the upper reaches of the Waihou near the sandpit. He had a man and boy on the lookout and was difficult to approach. However, witness later got near aiid found accused fishing with a worm.
Asked by the Magistrate (Mr. S. L. Paterson), if he had anything to say, accused replied that he had been informed there was a trout in the vicinity which was the “ length of a batten.” He did not try to dodge the ranger.
The Magistrate: The attraction of a big fish was too strong? Accused: Yes. The man who told me was not a fisherman. Hogarth was fined £2.
