MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

JULY MEETING. The July meeting of the Matamata County Council was attended at Tirau on Friday by the following members: Crs. J. W. Anderson (chairman, Tirau), J. Bruce (Karapiro), J. Pohlen (Matamata), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), E. D. White (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi), A. H. Stewart (Peria), E. Nickle (Maungatutari) arid A. T. Morriss (Putaruru). Also in attendance were Messrs. J. A. Beck (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer).

Gold and Scenery.

The Department of Lands and Survey advised that an application had been received for a prospecting warrant over the scenic reserve on Mt. Maungatautari, and the council was asked in its capacity as controlling authority whether it had any objection to the application being granted. The council decided to apply for a further extension of five years of its time as controlling authority, and to offer no objection to the application for prospecting. County Clerks. The New Zealand Institute of County Clerks wrote advising that the annual conference would be held in Wellington on July 25. The chairman said that there was an effort to secure uniformity of work, and also that clerks be made to pass an examination. On the motion of Cr. Cox, leave of absence was granted to the clerk to attend the conference if he desired.

Improving Main Road.

On the recommendation of the works committee improvements to the main road running from Matamata towards Hinuera past Richmond’s, Ruthe’s and Desmond’s properties, were left with the riding’ member, the chairman and the engineer with power to act. Cr. Pohlen remarked on the state of the road from Matamata to Waharoa past the saleyards.

The engineer said the difficulty was that a subsidised main road ran parallel and it would be expensive to have two through main roads alongside. The matter was left in the hands of Cr. Pohlen and the engineer. \ Te Poi Request. Mr. C. G. Murray, Te Poi, asked for permission to enclose a strip of the road opposite his farm so that he could clean same up and sow it down in grass.

Permission was granted, subject to the usual conditions.
