THREE MEN FRONT ROW. A. G. Yardley, Matamata delegate to the Waikato Rugby Union, writes:—“Sir, —l notice in your Monday’s issue that reference was made at the Matamata meeting to 1 the attitude of some Waikato union’s ' delegates to the question of New 1 Zealand adopting the three-men j front row system of play. One speaker stated that for some time some Waikato delegates had advocated this method of scrum work. As far as my memory serves me this question has only been seriously discussed once by Waikato in ten years —at the last annual meeting—when several Hamilton delegates advocated it. At that meeting the delegates to the New Zealand Rugby Union were also instructed to oppose any move to re-introduce the old kick into touch rule. Regarding the three men front row, Mr. Whiting explained that he was judging the methods on newspaper reports of the South African tour. When the delegates got to Wellington they secured firsthand information regarding the scrums between the Africans and New Zealanders, and consequently dropped any reference to an alteration in New Zealand play. In this they were later supported by the, management committee of the Waikato union. T write this in case any of the Matamata union officials should take it from the remarks made at the Matamata meeting that the Waikato union is in' favour of the three men in the front row play, or the old kick into touch rule."
