MANAWARU v. MATAMATA. The above game concluded on Saturday in a most exciting manner, the home team just winning on time by a margin of four runs. Ayers and Livingstone, the. two not out men, continued the Matamata first innings, but neither lasted long. Silk was the only one of the tail-enders to show up, and by notching a six-and two fours he quickly pi up 16. Matamata were all out for 135, which gave them a lead of 60 on the first innings. At their second attempt Manawaru, though batting one short, gave a much better display, showing good restraint. Cleave was their most successful batsman, scoring 38, which included a couple of sixes towards the end. The side was dismissed for 118, leaving the home team 60 to get in the last hour to secure a threepoint win. Starting very scratchily three home wickets were lost for 16. Then Porter and Whelan played steadily for a time until the fell with the score board, only showing 19. Beaver, however, stayed' with Whelan, and gradually the bowling was overcome. Time, however, was speeding, and, with eight minutes to go, some 17 runs were wanted. Beaver and Whelan then opened up a bit, and Silk, being promoted quickly, lashed up seven and the victory was thus snatched by four j wickets in practically the last over of j the day. Manawaru* players are to be complimented on their sporting play, for . though time was heavily on their side,* none of their players wasted a -second when it was to their advantage to do so.
