TRAFFIC INSPECTORS.

FOR PROPOSED) NEW AREA. Salaries Toe- Small. Consideration of a scheme for traffic inspectors to, cover the Upper and Lower Waikato areas occupied the attention of. the. Matamata County Council, om Eriday, when the Waikato County Council forwarded proposals decided, upon, at a meeting of representatives, of the Waipa, Raglan , Otorohanga and Waikato County Councils,, the Ngaruawahia Borough Council and the Huntly Town Board. The scheme embraced the areas named* and, subject to confirmation,/ was, to also include the Matamata and Piako counties, the Te Aroha* Cambridge and Te Awamutu boroughs and the Matamata town; districts. The chief inspector was, to, be paid £7 per week and assistants £6. Each inspector was to provide his own car, but motor spirit, oil and tyres were tc be provided by the group. Payment was to be made by local bodies on 2 percentage basis, and a subsidy oi £ for £ would be made by the Mair Highways Board. The chairman said the works committee discussed the matter anc thought it would not be possible tc get a man at £6 per week to fine his car. Cr. Allen : You can put the cost oJ the' car down at £2 per week at least Cr. Cox agreed and said the heac man should be paid at least £lO pen week. Cr. Bruce : A man would have tc be a man of substance to provide his own car. Cr. Allen thought the wages stipulated were at least £1 per week toe low all round. Cr. Morris thought motor cycles might do for the assistants. Cr. Cox pointed out that the biggest job would be to catch heavj traffic, and a car would be necessary To do the job properly a man woulc not have to stint his car. The engineer said depreciation oi a' car could be put down at £IOO pe: year, with running expenses in addi tion. * The chairman said the Matamata Town Board had turned down the scheme, but he did not think the board was greatly interested. The works committee’s recommend ation that the principle of the scheme be agreed to, but that th< council was of the opinion that the cost of the scheme had been under estimated, was then adopted. It was suggested that the executive shoul( meet and put forward a more feas ible scheme.
