LICHFIELD

On Friday evening last; for the first time for at least a year or more, a public social, in the form of a dance, was held at Lichfield. The function took place in the local school, and was well attended, the schoolroom being well filled by Lichfield residents and visitors, including a party of 14 or so arranged by the Putaruru Tennis Club in acknowledgement of the attendance of Lichfield residents at the grand ball recently held by the club. The musician Avas Mr. E. J. Darby, as a violinist, there being no piano, and at first this Avant Avas rather market, despite the genius and enthusiasm of Mi'. Darby with his violin. However, ingenuity assorted itself, and after the ’supper, which was an excellent one, a jazz band, with the violin as leading instrument, was organised, the school bell, with a tea-tray for a drum, and a home-made gazoo Avcrc requisitioned Avith impromptu players, and it Avas a merry time that resulted. Mr. Newport, jun., assisted with a cornet, Avhile vocal assistance was also not lacking. With this bright but rather hefty accompaniment, the dancing continued in the spirit of fun and jollity until about 2 a.m., Avhen this dance, probably unique'' in the history of Lichfield, came to a close. The duties of M.’sC. Avcre carried out most efficiently by Mr. J. Vincent and Mr. Morrison, (headmaster of the Lichfield School, I and the committee Avhich arranged this entertainment have the satisiacfaction of knowing that those who attended it had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Incidentally it may be mentioned that a public meeting is to be held at Lichfield this Avoek to devise ways and means of getting a piano for the schoolroom.
