“SPRINGTIME IN THE ROOKIES” SATURDAY NEXT Thanks to a suggestion by gorgeous Betty Gtable, famed bandleader Harry James has a now and unusual addition to the ranks of his renowned Music Makers, which has proved itself sufficiently to become a permanent part of the James organisation. The newcomer is a French horn player of the Los Angeles W.P.A. Symphony Hand, AVillard Gulley. Gulley made, his film debut with Janies and his Music Makers in the new 20th Century-Fox technicolour musical hit, “Springtime in the Rockies,” coming to the Athenoum Hall on Saturday, starring John Payne, Betty Grablo, Carmen Miranda and Cesar Romero.
According to swing maestro Harry James, it is the first time that a modern jive orchastra has experimented with a French horn, and he has blonde Betty Gtable to thank, for she knew of Gulley and asked Harry to give him—and his horn—a trial. It proved so effective in the making of the film that James is retaining Gulley and his French horn as a permanent part of his band.
Featured in the strong supporting cast arc Edward Everett Horton and Charlotte Greenwood, who handle the laughs—but good.
Bowling. Throe rink's of Arrow bowlers journeyed to Wanaka on Saturday last to take part in the Otago Central competitions. One team secured a win and the other two were beaten by a small margin.
