SOLDIERS HONOURED

A farewell social was tendered to ■L'/A. J. 1 itzpatrick and ■ a welcome homo to Sapper W. Murphy, Sgt. W. Dalrymple, L/A K. Pittaway and Tpr. P. Mcßride on Friday last. The hail was again tilled to capacity. The first part of the evening was devoted to dancing and before the supper a 1journuient the soldiers and airmen wore piped on to the stage by Messrs it. Mathosou and filch Jones. Mr Elliott, president of the Farewell Committee, welcomed all present. He said it was very pleasing to see so many local boys having returned. Spv W. Murphy was unfortunately invalided home but the other boys were home on furlough. The mayor, Mr AV. B. Gibb, then welcomed the guests of honour and said ho was very pleased to sec such a large gathering present. Mr Gibb said everyone regretted that Sapper Murphy had received an injury and hoped he would soon be well again. It was really a record, said one speaker, that out of four families there wore 12 serving in the forces, which was a great achievement. Ho hoped everyone of the boys would have a very happy furlouh. Joe was well liked by the public and they wished him every success and u sate return to his home. Two soldiers in the audience were also made very welcome, namely Pte. G. O’Fee and Dvr. S. Milne. Mr 11. I{. Eowo, on behalf of the R.S.A., welcomed the returned men and said every one was in sympathy with Sapper Murphy who, when the whips were cracking, was always there and will be there again. He found Joe a very decent young man and wishedhim all the best. The usual presentations were then made to L/A. J. Fitzpatrick and the other boys. Mrs R. Scott, president of the W.D.F.U., also made a presentation to Joe Fitzpatrick, and Wished him God speed, good luck and a safe return to his home. Mrs Scott also wished the other men the best of luck. Musical honours were then given. Miss Molly Hoyle rendered two tup dances, two pipe solos and also played an extra for the dance which wore all much appreciated. Mr Kitehio was M.C.
