ARROW HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL SHOW The nineteenth annual show of the Arrow Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Atheneum Hall on Wednesday, 18th February. The show proved a great success in every respect. The number of entries received constituted a record and the patronage accorded by the public was very encourageing under present conditions. The quality of the exhibits was well up to standard. The executive, as usual, worked exceedingly hard and deserve every credit. Owing to the absence of the secretary, Mrs R. M. Dougas, Mrs I. B. Ritchie carried out the onerous duties in a most satisfactory manner. The judges also deserve a word of praise for their efforts which met with the approval of exhibitors. Two guessing competitions which were conducted during the show helped to augment the funds. Outstanding in the cut flower section were gladioli of which there was a very full entry in all classes. .The blooms were of such all-round excellence that the judge found it difficult to make his awards. Sweet peas, for which record entries were received, made a fine display and revealed some very good quality blooms. Mrs P. Hansen, a prominent exhibitor, easily won most points and secured W. D. Warren's trophy. Phlox drummondi, larkspur, stocks and salpiglossis all brought out big competition. The roses were not quite up to standard though Mrs Jas. Hansen won the prize for an outstanding bloom. The decorative section was an attractive one, the bowls and vases being a feature in the general layout of the show. There were some splendid samples of vegetables on the tables. Mr P. Hansen, a prominent exhibitor, again put in numerous entries. His exhibits were all well grown and he well deserved the honours of this section. Potatoes, peas, onions, eschallots, carrots and marrows and a fine collection put. in by Mr Hansen made up a varied and interesting section.

The judge remarked that the baking was of excellent quality and equal to any she had seen in shows in Christchurch. In the industrial section the work displayed was of a high order and certainly a great credit to the exhibitors. The children’s section was a credit to all concerned and the judge had a very difficult task in separating one exhibit from the other, SECTION I Judge; Mr J. B. Perks.
