MEETING OF WAKAITPU BRANCH
A meeting -of the above was held in the Council chambers, Arrowtown, on Saturday evening 21st ult. Present: Messrs W. P. Saunders (president). T. M Houston R. Shaw, D. H. Cockburn. A .Mcßride, M. Elliott f S. Jenkins. W .S. Reid, A. Y- Miller. 1 D. Mackie, W. H. Thompson, M. Jen- - kins and R. S-Ht. (hdn secretary). District Ti rile Manager; Inverrar- • gill, wrote, in reply, stating that it • had been arranged that in future the freight on peas on the Lake steamers ■ wou’d he the same as- that charged for grain.-—Received . Chief Post-master, Invercargill, wrote in reply to the request to- have the post office half-holiday in Queenstown changed from Saturday to some other day in the week owing to the inconvenience to country residents on the rural delivery. Writer stated that Saturday was considered the most suitable day for the half-holiday, and as from inquiries- made, it was found that -there was only a small) amount of rural delivery mail) matter despatched on that afternoon, it was not thought desirable to make a change—Received . The Director of Agriculture. Wellington. wrote regarding the request made by the branch to have Kingston fixed as the free de’ivery point for supernho-phates coming to the district. Writer stated that after making inquiries it was- found that it would not be possible to accede to the request, which, if granted would necessitate the increase in the price of superphosphates. Mr Cockburn said that he had interviewed Mr, R. B-. Tennert, of the Agricultural Department Wellington rewarding the installation of a drying plant for the lime deposit at Lake Hayete . Mr Tennent did not think that the requirements of the district would warrant the expense of the plant. Mr Cockburn also stated that | Mr Tennent had given him to under- j stand that there was a possibility lof a subsidy being granted for bringing superphosphates to the district The president said that he understood that a private firm had now obtained an option over the lime at Lake Hayes. Mr Cockburn gave a brief resume of the principal burin ess transacted at the recent Dominion Conference at which he was one of the Otago delegates.
