SUCCESSFUL INAUGURATION OP SPORT

Ski-ing in the Wakatipu district has now been firmly established, and it is only a matter of time when it will, be taken up as a popular winter sport. iScoires of ski-eim have come to Queenstown during the last winter and, together with a limited number of local enthusiasts, have found full scope for participation in this/ exhilarating , pastime. The inauguration of ski-runmiLng contests was consummated at the weekI end when a. limited programme of events was successfully carried out -on j the Crown Range, in the presence of ["close on 60 people. The participants in the competitions were*- members of I the Tasman Club (Tima.ru), Southland Ski Club and Queenstown Winter Sports Club. The ski run marked out for the competition, a, downward one .commenced at- a point on the summit of the Crown Range close to the road. It proved a sporty one and gave ample- scope for experienced sk tens.. The snow was. slightly soft \ owing to the advent of warmer weather, However, the standard of ski-ing _ wa.si exceedingly good. The competitions were successfully organised and conducted by,- Masisns H. ' and A. Wigley and Otto San.tucr. The. teams consisted of two men and two ladies, the winners, being four members of the- Southland Ski Club. The following is the result of the competition: Messrs D. Tatton and M. Johnston and Mrs A. Hamilton and Miss Jean McCauley (Southland -Ski Club) .10 min 21 3-5 secs/, 1; Messrs P. Young and E. Eanvalker and -Miss/eo S. Cook and M. Fear (Tasman Club) 14 min 2'B‘ 1.-5 sees/., 2, Queenstown ■Ski Club 17 min 1. sec, 3. It has been decided to make the competition an annual one and it (is anticipated that the Grown Range will provide -every facility for successful sport. Aisi an added incentive, it is interesting to note, that Messrs H. and A. Wigley have- kindly agreed to present a cup for future competitions. On Saturday some enjoyable skiing was. also indulged in'on Skippers saddle.
