Queenstown Progressive League
A meeting of tlio Queenstown Progressive League was hold on Thursday evening, 31st ult., Mir J. S. Royds president, wasi in the chair, and there were present; Mrs- B. Curtis, Dr. Anderson, Capt. Herbert, Messrs H. Tomki.es, W. D. Warren and A. WigIcy. The secretary, Southland Automobile Association, in reply to the League regarding criticism bv a certain member of the camping ground, advised that although certain remarks appear in the- Press, the full remarks were not always reported. The committee’s attitude, the letter stated, is one of help to various bodies as- well as to the motorists whom it represents.—Received. The South Island Travel Association wrote stating that notwithstanding the withdrawing of support from the Association for its special guide book, Queenstown will be given due prominence both in this year’s ‘‘Discovery” and regional guide. It, was hoped to co-ordinate all publicity for the South Island and this aspect would be brought to the notice -of the League. The secretary, Southland Progress League-, forwarded copy of a circular from the- Stewart Island Historical Centennial Committee which outlined a proposal for publishing a history of “Kakiura.” The executive hoped an appeal for assistance towards thisi worthy object would meet with a good response.—Received. Requests for information regarding steamier fares, -accommodation -and camping fees- war© received from various quarters- and the. secretary was instructed to collect the necessary .particulars- and supply same. It was stated that no reply had been received from the Tourist Department regarding an undertaking to print another 15,000 booklets of Queenstown. The; .secretary stated that there were about 2000 in band of last issue which would be insufficient for distribution next, season. —lt was resolved to again write the Department on the matter. The matter of financing the cost -of the booklets was gone into; also rose in vatic n of funds for local amenities, but no decision was- made pending certain negotiations in progress. It was decided to write the Borough Council asking that the foreshore in the vicinity of the- bathing sheds- be restored to its usual -state before the holidays.
