SIXTY-FIVE YEARS AGO

(From the files of the L.W. Mail.) The news from all river claims is favourable. At Arthurs Point Che claims are working vigorously with former results. All seem contented, and a new company is on the tapis. Up the river operations go on in the/ ,<suai manner. Rear Sutherland’s Creek, the Blind Stab Co. (Davis, Aitken and party) have netted 700 ounces, or thereabouts, for the last month’s work. Higher up, at Stouey Creek, good news comes, as also from the Left-hand Branch- etc. The season has been most propitious for working liver claims. ***** We are informed that hj sample of white metal has been left with Mr C. Beeby, jeweller, Queenstown, for his opinion, which he, after several tests, states to be silver, in nearly a fine state. The miner who loft the sample remarked he .had thrown away a large number of pieces under the impression that they wore worthless. The locality was not divulged, but it is probably in the Moonlight or Upper Shotover district. ***** Queenstown has made many advances of late in the material progress! of substantial buildings, but we are satisfied any impartial observer will admit that the latest completed production stands pre-eminent, both for use and ornament. We refer to the new two storey additions made _to the Queen’s Arms Hotel. The building, which is erected on one of the best sites in town, and at tha junction of three streets, is in the Italian style of architecture and is greatly improved by a covering of white stucco, and the fine portico in front. The structure, which partially overlooks the lake, is really a handsome one, and, for beauty of design, is inferior to none in the province, or even the colony. 'The enterprising proprietor, Mr A. Eicliardt, deserves great praise for lus untiring endeavours, not only to produce something which will be a lasting credit to the city of the Lakes, but also in providing accommodation suitable for the yearly increasing number of tourists who continue to visit these 5h0re5.—19.3.73. ***** The escort on Friday took down, in round numbers, 3,573 ounces ol gold, namely—From Queenstown, 2,303 ounces; from Arrowtown, 7(13 ounces, and from Cardrona. 507 ounces. The quality of gold taken down by previous escort was 2,007 ounces. Wo wonder whether our Arrow contemporary will this time utter another Jeremiad over the depravity of human nature in the perpetration of “manipulations,” which everyone but titself, and perhaps a few of its town Headers, must consider straight forward and businesslike; or whether it will make another vain kick, be,cause the back of its plucky little neighbour ventures to send nearly one-half its (?) gold as “from Cardrona.’’
