UP-TO-DATE GARAGE.

The new garage and petrol station, which is being built for Mr J. C* Cockburu on the site in Ballarat street once- owned by the late Mr Wesley Tin ton and his successors, is making good progress under the direction of the builder, Mr J. O. Scott, and a gang of carpenters and labourers. The structure is being wholly built in croncete and measures s2ft x 52ft x 12ft overall. The outside walls, which are built on solid concrete ba-es. are bin thick and reinforced with tin to fin steel rods, with heavy beams occurring at intervals in order to give strength to the building. The garage stands back 21ft from the pavement. In this space bowsers are to be placed in such positions as will readily permit of ingress and egress of motor vehicles. A verandah 24ft by 14ft will also be placed over the entrance. The workshop, which will be at the back of the building, measures 30 x 52 and will give ample room for many years to come. Exit from this department can he conveniently made through the lane-way, which leads into Church street. Provision is made for a storeroom 18ft x 9ft and an office at the entrance measuring 12ft by Sft. A pit 30ft x Sft by oft deep will bo conveniently situated in the floor of the building. The dimensions of the space for housing ears will be 50ft by 62ft. On the south side of the garage at the rear a wash-down will be< .'ocatod for the purpose of cleaning ears. The roof will be carried by principals placed at intervals throughout the building. Good lighting will be provided by skylights, and steel sashes placed on the rear and south sides of the building. Ample ventilation will come from a semi-circu-lar ridging placed on the top of the roof. Modern equipment will be placed in the workshop as well as a hydraulic hoist to lift 4 tons . Private houses in course of erection are Mrs W. Menlove’s 2-storied residence on the Eastern Terrace; Mr R. Ingles’ modern bungalow, in Brisbane street, facing the Franktou arm, and Mr J. C. Cockburn’s residence in Stanley street.
