Inward Correspondence.
The Dept, of Internal Affairs advised that Wednesday, 11th August, had been fixed as the day for the observance of Arbor Day, but Avhere, on account of climatic conditions in any district, the day fixed is deemed unsuitable, some other suitable day in August could be observed—On the motion of Or. Heed, seconded by Cr. Hansen, it Avas decided to observe Arbor Day on the 25th August, and that 1000 pinus insignus trees be procured for planting out on reser\ T e adjoining Dr. Ferguson’s residence, the local school children to be asked to take part. The chief Inspector of Explosives advised that Messrs McGill and Saunders had been granted permission to remove one petrol pump from its present position to a neAV site, and also to instal an additional pump on the new site, on condition that the provisions of the Explosives and Dangerous Goods Act be complied Avith; and that the tAvo pumps be erected alongside of one another on the neAV site. Received.
The secretary, H.Z. Standards Institute, Wellington, wrote asking for a complimentary copy of the Council’s ny-laws.-ißeceived. The Controller and Auditor-Gene-ral wrote acknowledging advice of the appointment of trustees to control the Arrowtown cemeteiry, and stated that it was noted that only two trustees had been appointed. Writer pointed out that it was necessary that the number of trustee® should not be fewer than three in number.—Cr. Reed was appointed to act with Crs Hansen and Hamilton (previously .appointed). The District Public Trustee, Invercargill, wrote stating that he regretted that he was still unable to make payment of arrears of rent and rates owing by the estate of the late William J. Henderson. An oiler recently received for the purchase of the leasehold was at present under consideration by the beneficiaries, and if a sale was effected, payment of the rent and rates would be made immediately.—Received.
General. The striking of a general rate of 2s in the £ and a sanitation charge of of Us were confirmed. It was decided to make application to the Highways Board for £BO for maintenance work.
The Mayor reported that the lessee of the Hail had been interviewed regarding the lighting system, and the
necessary improvements had now been carried out.
Or. Jenkins, chairman of the Works Committee, reported that good progress had been made with the gravelling of streets. Wiltshire and Hertford streets had been gravelled, and the cost for cartage up to the present was £l9 10s. —It was decided that the lorry be engaged for another four days. The Clerk was instructed to write Messrs Mandeno, Lee, and Brown, engineers, asking for particulars as to what progress was being made regarding tenders for improvements to Borough water supply. Accounts amounting to £44 4s lid were passed for payment. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to' the chair.
