Importations of Stud Stock.

A FURTHER SHIPMENT OF MERINOS. Exceptional interest was displayed some six weeks ago in the arrival iu the Dominion of the world’s record shipment of stud-stook—eight hundred merino rams amid ewes from the South Australian stud of Messrs Henry Collins and Co., Lucernedale. These sheep were of exceptional quality and made a deep impression with fine wool breeders, and had it not been so late in the season many more orders would have been placed than those supplied by the second shipment from the same quarter that has just arrived. The s.s. “Canadian Constructor” with a shipment of 81 ewes and 50 rams arrived at Blnll on Thursday, where the sheep for Southland clients were landed. Numbers will also- be lauded at Dunedin, Timaru, Lyttelton and Wellington. Those for the last named port are for Marlborough clients. The larger portion of this shipment is of high-class stud ewes for clients who purchased stud rams in the previous consignment. ® Mr. Ohas. Coulter, of Hawkesbury,Blenheim, who it will be remembered created quite a stir among sheep breeders by purchasing the stud ram “Commotion” for the record price lor New Zealand of 1000 guineas, receives iii this shipment thirty exceptionally choice stud ewes. Mr Arthur Collins personally selected, these ewes for Mi’ Coulter to mate with “Commotion, 7 and he advises that better ewes have not been shipped to this country. Another notable buyer is Mr E. At Weld of Flaxbourne, who has secured Some first-class stud ewes in lamty. Mr Eo-bt. Jopp of Chatto Creek, Otago, also secured a stud ram, the balance of the shipment being composed of selected flock rams and breeding ewes for Otago, Canterbury and Blenheim clients. There is no doubt that the Lucernedale sheep have captured the fancy of breeders here, and already a large number -of orders have been booked for delivery next season. In view of the exceptional demand for hue wools of which there is a world wide -shortage, these extensive importations of high-class merinos into the Dominion must prove a very valuable national -asset.
