RACING

Several members of the Lake County Jockey Club visited the Frankton racecourse last Thursday and met the trustees, Messrs Geo. Eeid and E. Monson. The buildings, etc., were thoroughly inspected and arrangements were made to have the necessary repairs effected if the Club decides to hold its next meeting at Frankton. It is not intended to make a mile course tor the first meeting as there would be insufficient time for a new track to set.

Country Clubs and the Tote

Wellington, July 28.

The Gaming Amendment Bill introduced by Mr W. T. Jennings proposes to give the Minister for Internal Affairs power to grant totalisator permits for one day to those racing clubs which have been deprived of that privilege by the report of the Racing Commission. When the grievances of those clubs were brought under the notice of Sir James Carroll recently he stated that the Government could not be expected to bring down such a measure; but he also suggested the possibility of the facilitating of its progress in the House. What action the Government will take in the matter remains to be seen; but the extreme anti-gambling section of the House is already considering the possibility of moving an amendment to the Bill with the object of wiping out the totalisator altogether.
