Our Territorials.
The year 1911, which has just commenced, promises to be fraught with peculiar interest to the people of the Dominion of New Zealand in the matter of defence. During it the compulsory scheme will be brought into operation, and the conditions of the Territorial force will be altogether different in many respects from what has obtained in the past. The arrival of the new Commandant and the Imperial General Staff officers is already making an appreciable difference; and the training of officers and N.C.O.'s which will be commenced at the camp near Featberston this week, will probably be of a higher standard than has hitherto been carried out in New Zealand. Although nothing will be done regarding the new organisation of companies until after the end of the present Territorial year (February), the nomination of officers and others for the positions of adjutants and instructors is the initial step, and it is safe to predict that as the time draws on greater interest will be taken in the new system of defence, aud the alteration to the compulsory system of training will be closely watched by English-speaking people everywhere.
