HEAD OF LAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Glenorchy, Sept. 12

The weather during the past week has been all that could he detired, and the farmers therefore are getting on well with the ploughing. The miners are also getting their l'ttle bits of ground turned up for potatoes and vegetables. Last night (Sunday) the rain commenced in earnest, and this morning the first considerable spring flood is roaring down the creeks. Sufficient snow has fallen on the main tops to prevent a very heavy flood. Scheelite reefing is still progressing at the near claims but it will be some time before the snow will be sufficiently cleared away to allow work to be resumed at the far back mines.

Gold mining (alluvial) is being carried on by only 3 parties at present —Mr Harry Campbell and a party of Chinamen ia the bed of the Bucklerburn Oreek, and Valpy Bros, on the Bucklerburn terrace. The lastnamed party expect to prdve their ground by the time the present paddock is finished. A very enjoyable birthday party was held at Mr Aitken's, Paradise House, last Friday, a large number of folks being present. The store openwd at Glenorchy a short time back is a great boon to the place, and Mrs McKinley is now doing a consideiable business. She is to ba corgratulated on her enterprise.
