THE PRINCE AND THE ACTRESS.

A Fiji Prince has made a splendid offer to an English actress, who, strange to say, will hare none of it He is trying to think out why. Having travelled far from home, he dropped into the theatre where the lady was playing, and it was a case of Pendennis and the Fotheringay over again. , Tlfie enamoured monarch, besought an introduction, and, that accomplished, explained to the actress that she could be hie. These comparatively uncivilised kings hate to make themselves cheap. But the lady said it was out of the question. This put His Majesty in unaccustomed position; for, whichever way you put it, it certainly looked as if she had refused him. He went to the theatre again to have another look at her, and left it feeling more enamoured than ever. What could be her reason for saying him nay P Love shed alight on it It must be because of those other wives. Now that he thought of it, English maidens had curious ideas oh the subject of marriage.. They considered that they should have a husband each. Joyfully went the King to the actress, and explained that he had forgotten his four other wives. But they would not stand in the waf, Let her say the word, and he would have them strangled. Still she denied him; and he hwreturned heme thinking that of all the unaccountable people the Eaglish are the strangest.
