A Wellington telegram in the Dunedin Star aays : _Careful computation shows the adult males in the Colony, 130,000. Of these only 60,000 are now on the electoral roll It is estimated that the proposed Manhood Suffrage Bill of the Government will give votes to between 30,000 and 40,000 more. The remainder will represent the 'loafing* element. The census returns, showing the total population of the whole Colony, are now completed. Males, 230,898 ; females, 183,273 ; total 444,171. In this is included 4302 Chinese, but no Maori population. Chatham Island : 100 males 72 females. Mr Reeves, the new member for Grey Valley does not believe in secular education. Atjone of his recent meetings he said, " I am adenominationalist; I have lost some, and will perhaps lose more, friends, on this account; but if I were to lose the election twenty times over I would stick to my colors." Sir William Jervois (the European Mail states) is now in London, and looking very well after his trip to Australia. He believes there is a great future for the colonies if the democrats can be brought to understand that their interest lies, not in offering a factious opposition to progress, but in doing their best to promote useful and necessary works, and in supporting the introduction of a useful class of immigrants. His plans for naval and military defences of the colonies, having been explained, have been generally endorsed by the authorities, and it is hoped that the colonies wdl lose no time in carrying them out. Mr T. Gardiner, of the Wellington Chronicle, on receiving the writ of the libel from Messrs Blundell of the Post, publishes the whole document, ending with the following statement:—" I will here state that, while I return thanks for the low figure claimed as damages—only £333 6a 8d each-a sum that looks rather cheap. 1 will not keep these three 'injured innocent' waiting long. Thomas GabdCER."
