TO CORRESPONDENTS.
Common Sense.— We have no fault to find with your letter beyond the one tee mentioned in our last. Now, however, that our rule has been complied with, we should be most happy to insert it, were the affair stilt in dispute; but the Warden has decided, or been instructed, to allow river claims, and there is an end to the matter so far—though whether the miners will eventually consider such a course beneicial remains to be seen. G. Clements.— There is no desire on our part to deprive you of the means of defending the conduct complained of in our late leading article, but we must certainly decline inserting the letter you have sent, as it contains matter not at all pertinent to the subject, and personalities and revelations of a private nature, which we shall invariably most rigorously exclude. You seem to have forgotten one thing, viz.; — that we did not write a line concerning Mr Rees personally, and are far from possessing any feeling against that gentleman, whom we believe to be all you have have described him. Still, as enjoying a monopoly injurious to the public interest, we feel ourselves obliged as independent journalists, to protest against such conduct. Several communications are unavoidably po.tponed till our next.
