ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
ATHLETE KILLED. [Per Press Association.] DUNEDIN, November 26. At Chatto Creek, James' Balioch, a well known athlete, employed on the irrigation works, was killed as a result of tho capsizing of a dray. FELL INTO A HOT STREAM. ROTORUA, November 26. Yesterday a boy, a year and nine months old. Bon of A. Newby, Ohinemutu, fell info a hot stream near his home aucl died this morning. Tho stream was supposed to have been covered, but part of the covering had been removed. BOATING ACCIDENT. OAMARU, November 26. The inquest on the body of John Shepherd, who lost his life in a boating accident in tho harbour yesterday afternoon, was held to-day. The jury found that deceased was accidentally crowned by the. swamping of a rowing boat. The jury highly commanded the plucky efforts of a nineteen-year-old youth, named Walter Gibb, who was acting as coxswain of the boat and at the risk of his life made a desperate endeavour to rescue Shepherd, who clunsj to Gibb and both sank three times. Gibb, howevei, retained his presence of mind and supported Shepherd for ten minutes until a rescue boat arrived from the shore. Gibb was exhausted on being helped out of the water, but Shepherd was beyond human aid.
