A meeting called for the purpose of dis-r cussing the question of holding a re-union of tho soiiolars attending the Church of Englanr. School during the head mastership of tho late Mr J. Matthews, between the years 18C-2 end 1874, was held in tho Farmers’ Clubroom, Kaianoi on Saturday evening. Mr A. F-earco presided over an attendance o. sixteen. Mr R. Powrio was appointed interim secretary. It was resolved that those present should compile a liat of surviving scholars of the school, and about thirty-eight names wero received. The meeting then adjourned for a fortnight. ELLESMERE. At lha last meeting of tho EllcsmeT® Lands Drainage Board, there wero present Messrs F. Hubbard, F. Miller, H. Pickering, J. Sharp, O. M’Gough and J. Macartney. An apology was received for absence from tne cbairmen Mr Ji. M. Morten, who was visitjn«- tho North Island, and Mr Hubbard was voted to tho chair. Mr AV. M’Vioker and others wrote, .asking that a special area be defined and a rate levied by the board for the purpose of cleaning and maintaining tho Embankment Road drain. Mr Hubbard and tiio secretary were appointed to interview thoso who had forwarded tho petition. The Canterbury Progress League forwarded a copy of the report of tho Christchurch Sea. Communications Committee. It was agreed that, the report should bo passed round tho mem hors for consideration during the month. Mr Miller urged that any repair work necessary at tho lake outlet culvert should bo attended to without delay, as the winter months wero unsuitable for such work. Tho secretary was instructed to act accordingly. A motion passed at last meeting to increase the wages of employees to 13s per day was confirmed. HINDS. The final weloomo liome to returned soldiers was held in tho Hinds Hall on hriday evenim'. The chiof guests lvore Messrs J. Studholmo, J. Findlay, J. Mcoro, A. Irving, D. Buttorick and S. Haineu. Apologies wero received from Messrs Findlay- and li. Rogers. Mr J. M Hampton presided, and in a patriotic speech presented Mr Studholmo with a gold medal. A concert programme was submitted and after supper Jiad been served a dance was hold. MARSHLAND. At a meeting of tho Marshland Hall Committee, it was decided to have an outside electric lamp placed on tho north-west corner of the building similar to tho one at the Methodist Church. There was a large gathering at tho Methodist Church on Wednesday evening last, when a social was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. G, Abbott, who will leave this week for a trip to England Musical and elocutionary items wero given by Mesdames Lusworth, Spencer, Reovo and Dixoy, the Rev H. Spencer, Messrs J. Voss and C. Dixey, and Master L. Martin; also two dialogues by the Misses I. Duder and D. Basher Presentations on behalf of tho congregation, Ladies’ Guild and choir wore made by the Rev H. Spencer and Mrs Voss, and short eulogistic addresses were given by Mr J. Goodman and Mr J. Voss. At the monthly moating of tho M.Mshl«id
Methodist Church Ladies’ Guild, Mrs Voss presiding, a letter was received from Miss Lobby, resigning the position as secretary ou ccooun.t of her leaving tho district to tie trained as a deaconess for Maori misskwii work. It was decided to accept the resignation with regret, and to congratulate Miss Lobby on her decision to engage in such an important sphere of church activity. Miss Una Dobby was appointed to take her sistor’s place. Ono new member was elected. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Under. ■ Tho returned soldiers of tho district are makin" elaborate preparations for a ball to be hold hero on Juno 2.
The road race next Saturday afternoon will be tho last of the season, which has been 3 very successful one.
