NEWS AND NOTES. Crib was scratched for the Renown Steeplechase at .5 ,p.m. yesterday. A fine morning and the prospect of some interesting work in view of the Royal meeting on Saturday did not attract many visitors to Riccarton yesterday morning. The outside of the course proper was in use for fast work and as it provided good going everything of a serious nature was done on it. Glentnnner, brought homo by Wartone over about three and a half furlongs, galloped a mile in lmin 50 2-sseo. Strayshot ran along comfortably over four furlongs in GGsec. YSaimai galloped a. mile alone, tho last, seven taking lmin 41 25sec. Bonnie Maid was going belter than Onslaught after six furlongs had been covered in lmin 18 2-ssec. Coalition gave H. M' Sweeny a comfortable ride in a round over the big country, and afterwards worked well with Seadown oyer a mile and a quarter on the course proper, the last nine fil'd on ,2 a taking 2min 6sec. v espucci and another from Mason’s ,-t.ib.e spurted half a mile in 50 2-ssec, Iho former’s effort being particularly pleasing- ,

Bore, with the assistance of War Cry over tho last bit, could not have done any better when a mile had been left behind in lmin £0 2-ssee.

Tunic and Triboulot, separately, did strong work on the plough. Royal Star had a slight advantage over Chaeronia at tho end of a mile on the course proper in lmin 47 2-ssec. Seadown (H. M’Sweeny) and Kohu (Farrar) were companions in a schooling task, the former jumping four hurdles and tho latter three. Both jumped well. Seadown afterwards went with Coalition on the oourso proper.

Karo (Deeley) pleased the best of the morning by the easy manner in which she galloped six furlongs- With Adopted as a companion sho covered plenty of ground and made light of her work in lmin 18 2-ssec.

Checkmate was in front of Nightraider at the end of six furlongs, run in lmin 22sec.

Hetaua, on the inside, was going better than Kilmoon .at the finish oi a live furlong gallop in lmin 5 l-ssoc. Arrowsmith galloped six furlongs freely in lmin 17 2-ssec. It is doubtful if He ’could have done much better. Foo Chow and Bondage were well matched over seven furlongs, run in Lmin 32 3-ssee.

Kiltush had much the better of Brackenfield in the concluding stages of a mile which took lmin 45 l-ssec. Marc Anthony, with a companion over about six furlongs, covered a mile well, the last seven furlongs taking lmin 3Gsec.

daylight, could not have improved on lmin 47 4-ssec for the mile, in which Deep Well was his companion for about four furlongs. Sunart had the better of Imaribbon in their run over a mile, which was covered in lmin 46 2-ssee.

Nautiboy galloped a mile alone in lmin 53 2-ssec.

Gossard also worked alone, and ran the last five of six furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec.

Amythas, with the help of Mustard Pot over about the last five furlongs, was ticked out to run seven in lmin 29 2-ssec.

Will Cfikland had Sundance with him over the last five furlongs, and covered a mile at a sound pace. Gang Avva (Lorigan) gave a good exhibition over five hurdles, and his stable mate, Master Strowan, with the same rider up, did a pleasing round over tho big fences.

Tumult (Murfitt) gave a good exhibition over the steeplechase country for a green one.

Jeannot was scratched for the Welcome Hurdle Handicap, at the Royal meeting, at 10.20 a.m. yesterday.

The tea rooms at Diccartou will not be open at the Royal meeting to-mor-row until after 2.15 p.m. A number of horses with engagements at Riccarton to-morrow only raced on the first day of the South Canterbury meeting, returning to Christchurch by tho morning train from Timaru yesterday- Others came back on the special train last night, while the balance will como on to-day.

SOUTH CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. Tho autumn meeting of the South Canterbury Jookey Club was concluded yesterday in perfect weather. Tho attendance wae mueik bettor than on the first day.
