SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. All the work at Ricearton yesterday was done on the plough, which was dry, but otherwise in good 1 order. Most of the trainers sent their charges along at a sound pace, but proceedings were not of special interest. The Cliokebore Lodge teqm got through useful tasks, in view of engagements at Easter, but they were not sent at their top speed. Onslaught, Royal Stag, Nightraider and Macduff went over 'five f urlongs in pairs, while the two-year-owls, Moorfowl and Winter Wind, covered a furlong further. They all look in good order. Karo and Adopted were companions in a useful gallop over seven furlongs'. Karo looks in good order for autumn racing. Amythns and Mustard Pot were companions in a hair-mile sprint. _ They are both very well. No decision has been reached so far as to whether Amythas will do his Easter racing at Riocarton or Eilerslie.

Paraoa and Bore did steady work in company. Bore is coming on nicely with a view to cross-country racing during the winter. Paraoa, though backward, is also in good order, and he may perform well at Cheviot.

Glentarner was sent over a mile at a strong pace, and finished up his task in good style. " He should be hard to beat in tho Cheviot Cup. Fiery Cross and Seme Kid were companion? in a smart sprint over five furlongs. Fiery Cross, with a pull in the weights, easily held the three-year-old, and as he is quite sound agfciin, ho may have to be reckoned with before the end of tho season.

Most of the Ricearton trainers with horses engaged at the Cheviot meeting intend to make the trip. There is some uncertainty, however, as dxi the time that will be occupied on the trip, and this may affect the trainers’ plans. The Australian-bred two-year-old, Vespucci, by Varco from the imported mare Far Away, by Eager, has rejoined R. J. Mason’s stable at Ricearton, after enjoying a good spell at his owner’s station. He looks a hit in the rough at present. Sleepy Head has incurred a 161 b penalty in the Studholmo Handicap and President’s Handicap at Waimate, hut oven with this rise sho may race prominentlj’. "When the Ricearton jockey, C. Emerson, left for England at tho end of last year, it was thought that he might remain there for at least the whole of this racing season. He soon changed his plans, however, and after a few weeks in England he has already left on his return journey. His father received a cable message this week from America, stating that he was working his way back quietly through the States and that he expected to reach Now' Zealand before the end of April.

F. E- Jones, who was for several years first horseman to Sir George Clifford’s stable, prior to taking up training in South Canterbury, has decided to hand in his trainer’s license, and he will resume his old occupation as a jockey. Ho will, however, continue his association with trotters and pacers, to the handling of which he has made considerable reputation. With good riders so scarce, the news of Jones's return to tho saddle will bo welcomed by owners. As he can go to scale at Bst 51b he should be assured of plenty of riding. A Sydney oable message states' that the racehorse Satin Bird, when gallop ing at Rar.dwick, collided with an unnamed Kenilworth gelding. Both were killed.
