The first witness in the Caillaux trial was William Martin, French Minister at Lisbon. He stated that when returning to France in 1911 ho was summoned to Madrid by Ring Alphonso, who said that hd had received, an emissary from Caillaux, who threatened King Alphonse with death. King Alphonse told him that he had written down the emissary’s threats textually, in order that, if anything happened, M. Poincare would know who was responsible. King Alphonso told M. Martin that ho put the document in a sealed envelope in a sale, with an instruction to of en it if his death occurred. M. Martin added that he acquainted M. Poincare with the whole incident. M. Paleologue, ex-Minisler and formerly Ambassador at Petrograd, gave evidence accusing Caillaux of undermining the Franco-Russian alliance. The - Russian Government was constantly at a loss to understand French policy during M. Caillaux’s regime. Addressing Caillaux, he exclaimed: “You are the Stunner of France.” Caillaux pushed forward, attempting to reach M. Paleologue, but the bystanders intervened. United Service. During the Caillaux trial the Chief Prosecutor charged Caillaux with receiving a secret visit from a German spy in Februarv, 1915, bearing x^ euce proposals. Caillaux admitted receiving the man, hut said he turned him out as soon as ho ascertained the real object of the visit.
