OBTAINING THE MONEY.

Hie Mayor and members of the War Memorial Committee Executive yesterday had an interview with Mr Gladstone Hill as to his taking in hand the work of collecting the money for the local war memorial. Mr Hill will reply by telegrams from Wellington to-day, as to the terms on which he will undertake the work. Ho was asked to obtain the bum of £25,000 in three months.

The Mayor stated yesterday that Mr Hill, probably, would work on a percentage basis, 'and would have his own organisation- His position would bo that of Dhector of Services.- It was proposed to appointed a small hoard, consisting of the Mayor and four other members, appointed by the executive. Mr Hill would be a member of the

board, which would be responsible for the finances 1 , and be behind the Direotor of Services. A meeting of the executive will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, to consider these proposals,, anl also calling for competitive designs and proposed sites for the Hall of Memories. No definite information is available at present as to who will ultimately fix the site. Questioned on this point, the Mayor said that nothing could be announced until after the meeting of the executive. He said that the board would leave the means of raising the money to Mr Hill, but that it would be by voluntary contributions, the first of which had come in that morning. Mr Hill could raise part of it from country districts if he wished to. All the board stipulated wa« that the sum should he £25,000. which, however, he believed, must be the minimum- “ We want the eitizops to come forward and take a practical interest in the undertaking,” he concluded, “ and we are looking to the newspapers for as much help as possible.”
