BURWOOD BRIDGE.

CITY COUNCIL'S OBJECTION. Correspondence relative to the erection of the Bunvood bridge was considered at last night’s meeting of the Moathcote County Council. An objection to the apportionment of the cost of the work having been received from the City Council, the County Council will in all probability apply, at the expiration of the apportioned time after the sending out of notices to the local bodies concerned (two months), for a commission to bo sot up to go into the matter.

Messrs Ford and Hadfield wrote stating that the road formation of the Burwood bridge was now well advanced, and that the road would lie metalled and completed in a very short time, and would depreciate if allowed to remain unused. They suggested that although the cost of construction had not been finally settled, the ere.ction of the bridge should be proceeded, with, and the cost; apportioned later. The timber on the site had depreciated. The City Council wrote acknowledging receipt of a notice of intention to recover from it part of the cost of the Bunvood bridge, and stating that it had lodged an objection to the proposal on the grounds that the bridge would be a long way outside the city boundaries and would not be of any advantage or benefit to the citizens of Christchurch or any portion thereof. It was stated that the county clerk had replied to Messrs Ford and Hadfield that the commencement of the Work before the question of liability was settled by the commission might prejudice the council’s position, _in which case any disadvantage accruing would have to bo passed on to the owners of the land. The council had therefore decided to await the result of the commission before moving. The road formation could not possibly be completed before the end of four months. The amount of depreciation pf timber was. unimportant.
