OPERATIC SOCIETY;.

FORMED IN CHRISTCHURCH. There was a very largo attendance at a meeting held last evening for purposo of considering a proposal to' form an Operafio Society in Christcliurcln Air R. A. Horne presided Addressing the meeting, Air T. Pollard said ho saw no reason why an operatic society should not bo formed in Christchurch, as had been done in other centres, where they had proved a groat success. Thoro was plenty of talent in Christ church. The Wellington S'ocioty wns ono of the best bodies of tho kind ho had had anything to do with, and ho hoped to son ono equally as good formed in Christchurch. All- J. R. Sharp, president of tho Blenheim Operatic Society, said that if a . successful society could bo established in a small place like Blenheim, _ there was no reason why an excellent society should not bo formed in Christchurch, where there was plenty of tnlent. Operatic work was enjoyable, and afforded a. good opportunity for loarning music. Ho was sure a Christchurch society could bo made as successful as those in Wellington and Auckland. ATr E. Branscombe said ho was confident that .the project would be successful. If; was decided, on the motion of ATr I. C. Raphael, seconded by Air V. Ct’. Carter, that an operatio society bo formed in Christchurch. , . , Mr Pollard offered his professional services free for the production of tho first performance. Tho offer was accepted with thanks. , , , . Tho following oommittce was elected to draw un a sot of rules: —Madame GoworBnrns, Mrs K. Andibort., Alisa G Edmonds, and Messrs P. C. Raphael, P.
