ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION.

GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY'S ACTION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Australian e*nd £f.Z. Cable Association. LONDON, March 2. Dr Cope, in an interview, said he 1 was greatly surprised at tho Geographical Society’s statement, particularly in view of the society's letter of April, 1910, stating that the committee approved of the general objects of the expedition, but that in view of its ambitious nature it was unable to recommend the council’s specific approval until the proposed staff, especially the names of the sailing master and the head of the scientific staff, were known. It was hoped, when tho plans were more mature, that more specific endorsement would bo given, Dr Cope proceeded, and since then nothing has been, heard until a fortnight ago. Meanwhile the expedition had made headway, and most of tho officers had been selected, including Messrs Joyce and Wilkins. Dr Cope deeply resents the innuendo on his leadership, which he has no opportunity of defending. Nevertheless lie is determined to proceed, and says tho arrangements are progressing splendidly.
