President Poincare refused to reprieve Lenoir, who was shot. Oaillaux’s trial has begun before the Senate, sitting as a High Court, on a charge of plotting against the exterior security of the State. At his trial, Caillaux delivered a calm and dignined speech in which he declared that the accusations revolted his conscience. During twenty years of puhlio life his only thought was his country’s good. He was now ready to vindicate the conception of France as the pattern for young democracies, and. also ready to refute tho testimony of the swindler's, adventurers and spies who alone opposed, him. The Court refused an application for provisional release, and adjourned till January 14 to contest tiho elections.
