SPORTING.

NEWS AND NOTES. A largo team of men is at present engaged at Riccarton, clearing away the debris from tho grandstand, which was destroyed by fire on Saturday night. Tho work is well in hand, and already the ground is beginning to look in a little better order. It is apparent, however, that the committee of the Canterbury Jockey Club is faced with a very difficult problem in making arrangements for the Grand National meeting next month. Following ou a sever© frost overnight, th© Riccarton tracks were very hard yesterday. The number seven grass was open for fast work, but there was nothing doing till late, most of the trainers waiting for the thaw to soften the ground. Even then, proceedings were decidedly uninteresting, most of the horses being restricted to strong pacing.

R. W. King has had an addition to his team, in the shape of Marvelite, by Rawiri —Bronzewing. When trained by C. Gieseler ho was a useful performer on the flat, mid ho should pay his way among the hunters, this being the class he is being qualified for at present. R. Emerson has taken in hand a couple of yearling colts, bred at Meadowbank. Fabroult, by Fobrikoff— Soult Athol, owned by Mr Harvey Patterson. is a particularly _ well-grown chestnut, with rather prominent knees, but in other respects a fine-looking youngster. Fabrinade, owned by Mrs Harvey Patterson, is by Fabrikoff— Pasquinade. He is smaller than his mate, but is a neat colt, full of quality. Cutts Brothers have taken the two-year-olds. Macduff and Miss Mimic, in hand, while they will make a start on Heathereote and Stepholm in a few days. Most of the limiters in Riccarton stables were absentees from the tracks .yesterday, being out qualifying for hunters’ events to bo decided later on.

Tho news that the Manuka was to leave Sydney yesterday for Now Zealand would be welcomed by more than one trainer in the Dominion. With tho stohmers taking up their running again there may be a prospect of getting horses to Sydnev before Jong. R. J. Mason is anxiously awaiting information regarding his chance of leaving shortly with his team. It is probable that Will Comfort started favourite for the Victoria Grand National Hurdle Handicap, which ho won on Saturday Sumn, who finished third, was another fancied candidato when the last mail left Melbourne. A Press Association telegram from Auckland states that the thoroughbred horse Arrowsmith, bv Chaucer— T.n Sagotta, purchased in England by Mr J. N. Hoslop, arrived by the steamer Port Pine yesterday. MARIE TEMPEST CASE. SUPREME COURT JUDGMENT REVERSED. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 8. The Court of Apoeal to-day gayo judgment in the case, Craw v. Jarden. This cape concerned the question of misrepresentation in rovard to the sale of the trotting mare, Marie Tempest, an appeal from the decision of Mt Justice Herdman, who held that plaintiff had not discharged! the burden of proof. The Court reversed this decision, holding that plaintiff had discharged this burden of proof that such representation had been made. The appoal was, therefore, allowed, judgment to be entered in the Supreme Court for plaintiff for £IOO without interest, and the return of three cheques for £IOO given to defendant, with costs in the Court below on. a claim for £4OO, and disbursements and witnesses expenses, to be fixed by registrar. Appellant allowed coats of appeal on tho miudlo seal©* as in a case from a distance. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, July 8.
