REPATRIATION.

WORK OP DEPARTMENT,

A progress return as at June 20 shows that the number of returned soldiers on the Repatriation Department’s register now “totals 53,824. This includes 27,159 men who have returned to the Dominion since the beginning of the year. Demobilisation cards are now held by the District Repatriation Officers as follow:

These figures include cards for some 3536 men who returned prior to -1919 and have inquired regarding assistance from the Department. The reports appended 6how that already 594 loans, totalling £131,465, to assist discharged soldiers to start in business have been approved by tho Ministerial Board, and that during tho past month £53,000 was actually paid ’on behalf of soldiers in tbe way of furniture, tools, sustenance, training fees, subsidised wages, assistance to apprentices, etc. The returns show that the total number of rnen at present being trained by tho Department is 819, and that during tbe month the Department seoured billets for S2l men who nopliod for such assistance. A further 333 men sought financial assistance to enable them to start in business, and 734 applied for grants for furniture and tools oi trade, etc. Tho amounts being paid out by tbe various boards and committees show a large increase.
