CONDEMNED MEAT.
WHERE DOES IT GOP
A question was asked a City Councillor last night as to what becomes of carcases of meat Condemned at the city abattoir. Councillor A. M’Kellar, replying to the question, said that a condemned carcase belonged to the butcher who had bought the stock, and it was usually sold to the By-products Company and converted into manureCouncillor H. Hunter said that ho had asked the question because of a nasty rumour that a lot of diseased meat went into human consumption in the city- Ho hoped that the city abattoir was safeguarding the health of tho citizens. The carcases condemned did not all find their way to the By-products Company, and ho had heard that some was being used in a raw condition for feeding pigs and poultry. Councillor Harper said that a lot of poor mutton* was being brought into consumption in the city, but the inspection was made in the proper way, and ho was satisfied that all the meat was quite healthy. “Where do the carcases go?” asked a councillor. “ They are boiled down,” said Councillor Harper. Replying to a question as to the great increase in the number of sheep slaughtered recently, Councillor Harper said that a great deal more mutton was available, and it was going into consumption. The Mayor said that all meat that came into the city had to be officially stamped, and meat condemned was stamped “ Condemned ” all over the carcase, and it was impossible for any such meat to come into the city and not be recognised. “Other than as smallgoods,” said a councillor. The debate was not continued.
