MAGISTRATE’S COURT

CHRISTCHURCH, ' Air S. K. M’Oarthy, S.M., presided at yesterday’s sitting of the Magistrate’s Court. A first offender was fined 10s, in default twenty-four 'hours’ imprisonment for drunkenness. Arthur M’Uonacbie was charged with the theft of goods valued at 10s, the property of the Waimairi County Council. Sub-Inspector Mullany stated that the goods, which comprised a quantity of asphalt and sand, were taken from the County Council’s gravel pit at Middleton. Accused, who pleaded guilty, stated that he had frequently taken quantities of sand from the gravel pit. He had permission to ao so. On the Inst occasion, however, tie took some sand without permission. It was a small quantity, and he did not bother about asking permission. His Worship said that aertised had no right to take tho goods as they did not belong to him. Accused was fined £5, and ordered to pay the sum of 6s removal, expenses, in default one month’s imprisonment. ‘ AMBERLEY. ' Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., and Mr G. Renner, J.P., were on tho bench at the Magistrate’s Court at Amberley yesterday. Joseph M’Tnggart, licensee of tho Great Northern Hotel, Wnikari, was charged with having permitted drunkenness on his licensed nremises. Mr Cassidy appeared for defendant and pleaded not guilty. Defendant was convicted and fined £5 with 10s costs.
