MAGISTRATE'S COURT

CHRISTCHURCH. Mr T. A. B. Bailey, S.AI., presided at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Alex Martin, who was belore the Court on Wednesday last, and who had then promised to go into tlio country, was sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for drunkenness, this being his e lavatory fourth offence. Kobero Donald Murray, charged with being drunk and with disorderly behaviour near the Excelsior Hotel, said he did not remember anything about the matter. The arresting constable said accused had been fighting with another man. On the charge of drunkenness ho was convicted and discharged, and on. the second charge he was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment. George Newman pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a felt hat, valujed at 30s, tho property of Patrick Shoulders. Further charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient means of support, accused pleaded not guilty, 'Hie record againstaccused was a bad one, and in view of this ho was sentenced to fourteen days’ imprisonment on tho charge of theft and to two months’ imprisonment on the other charge, the sentences to run concurrently. For cycling on tho footpath, \ r ernou Bleakley was fined 10s and costs. On a similar charge Clifford Noel Harvey was convicted and discharged. For cycling at night without a light A r ernon Bleakley was fined 10s and costs, while Alec Toon and Raymond Stokes were each fined 5s without costs. Leonard Paul Poore, charged with riding a motor-cycle over tho Bank of New Zealand corner at a speed of twenty-five miles an hour, said it was impossible to maintain that speed over tho crossing nt tho time stated—viz., 530 p.m. He admitted, however, riding at a speed of from ten to fifteen miles per hour, and he was fined 40s and costs. Charles Munro Smith, for whom Air A. 8. Taylor appeared, was charged with having allowed a flock of lambs to trespass on the railway line at. Lincoln. Lester, J.P., ye re eaoh convicted of diunkenuess and fined ss. ASHBURTON. Air V. G. Day, S.AL, presided at the Ashburton Alagistrate’s Court yesterday. Jeremiah Daily (Air Buchanan) was charged with assaulting James Bland and Herbert AVatts. lie was further charged on two informations with using threatening and abusive language. Air Buchanan said he had endeavoured to get accused to come to some arrangement as to an apology, but had been unsuccessful Defendant was convicted and discharged on the charge of assault, and was fined 10s with costs on each of the other charges.. Three charges were laid against Airs H. Clucas for failing to send a child to school. A fine of 5s on eacjj charge was inflicted. A\ r . Laffoy was charged with procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. Accused did not appear, but was represented by Air Buchanan, who stated that in connection with the case Laffey had already been fined for drunkenness. Accused was ordered to pay costs. AV. J. Brown was fined 10s with costs for failing to affix a. stamp to a receipt. Judgment for plaintiff with costs was given in a claim E. H. Healej v. It. Bepuison £6 10s, goods supplied. George Douglas Little was fined 10s aDd ccsts for failing to attend Territorial drill.
