MILITARY SERVICE.

'SECOND CANTERBURY BOARD. A sitting of the Second Canterbury Military Service Board was held yesterday. Mr 11. W. Bishop presided, and there were also present Messrs HunteT Weston and F. T. Eldridge, and Major Gresson, military representative.

Extensions of time were granted as follow :—To November 30: Private Thomas Edwin Cairns (in camp with Fiftieth Reinforcements). To January 6: Peter Kennedy, engineer's merchant. To January 20: Richard Oliver Flaiman, oignwriter, New Brighton (employer’s appeal). To February 3: Frederick Algernon N. Barcook, jam manufacturer, and Leonard Farr, electro-plater. To February 17: Charles Robert . Driver, miller. To April 23: Frank Jenkins, farmer, Little Rivet. His mother’s appeal on behalf of Archibald C. Campbell, stock agent, Akaroa, was adjourned till January. The case of Vernon Huia Field, dairy farmer, Port Levy, was adourned till the February sitting, and this was the decision in respect to the appeal of Albert Edward Marriott, ooachbuilder. The following appeals were adjourned sine die:—John Smith Pate, roll designer turner (employers’ appeal), Bertram Kendle G. Dawson, aviation instructor (employers’ appeal); Thomas John Cox and.W. Other appeals dismissed wero those of George M&tonka Clarke, dairy farmer, Styx (father’s appeal); Henry Sturge, milling machine operator; David Bavnes and Charles Henrv Marshall, threshing mill hands; Arthur Rsubcn Boxall, freezer and farmer, Belfast; .Tames John Chammen, labourer; John Thomas Glackin, woollen mill employee (emp'oyers’ appeal): Frederick W. Howell, dairyman; Joseph M’Millan, fruiterer: John Godfrey Parish, saddler; Alfred Richards, market gardener, Shirley. The appeal of Brompton and Sons on behalf of * Leonard Kibblewhite and Charles Blythe, iron workers, and those for Samuel Hamilton, farm labourer. Tai Tapu, and Stanley Edward Holland, foreman and were referred to tho Efficiency Board. Arthur Alloway was, on evidence produced, placed in Class D. No. 1 CANTERBURY BOARD AT RANGIORA.

The First Canterbury Military Service Board held a sitting at Rangiora yesterday; present—Messrs J. S. Evans (chairman), J. D. Millton and .H E. Robbins. _ Captain Pilkington was military- representative. Joseph V. Early, Government skin buyer, Christchurch, appealed on behalf of David Paterson, farm manager, Oxford. Appellant stated that after he bought his farm at Oxford, about two years ago, he was appointed Government skin buyer, .and ho engaged Paterson to take charge of the farm. The chairman said there wero five in tho family, and none serving. A man unfit for military service should liavo been employed. The case was dismissed.

Tho following cases were adjourned for Efficiency Board reports:—Frank F. Jackson, engine smith, appealed for J. T. Skilling, engineer and blacksmith, Rangiora; J. W. Strachau, threshing machine proprietor, Kaiapoi, till February to enable the board to report on applicant's threshing returns, there being a discrepance between the Government returns and the particulars supplied io the board; Alexander Forrest, farmer, Kaiauoi; Reginald L. Hulston. farmer, Ohoka.; William 11. H. Boylo, farmer, Fcrnside: end Maurice Frederick Bai'ey, farmer, Ashley Bank, till March; W. Holder, farmer, Mudbury; George A. Tuer, miller, Southbrook, appealed for by Messrs M'oir and Co.; J amea Morgan, engineer, Kaiapoi Freezing Works, appealed for by tho North Canterbury Sheepfanners’ Freezing Company; David J. Hawke’s farmer. Oxford, and Arthur George Hurley, farmer, Horrelville (Cl) till March.

In the appeal of School Committee on behalf of Norman W. Pavitt, head master of the Ferrside School, a sine die adjournment was granted. There being no appearance of James P. Ching, farm hand. Kaiapoi, tho appeal of his employer. Robert Kelly, farmer, was withdrawn, Clung to so into camp. Tho following cases were adjourned:—John •J. Hall, builder. Haunter Springs, till February. to enable time to apply for financial assistance; Alfred Thomas Blackwell, farmer, Amberley, for the production of a full financial statement in connection with his property. Thomas L. Gainsford, builder, Oxford (classed Cl), till February, owing to the uncertainty of tho future of tho C.l camp; William • T. Pain, farmer, Cheviot, till March; V/illiam H. Partridge, farmer, Omihi, till March.; Frederick Busch, farm hand, Amberley (Cl), till April; Henry L. Scott, farm hand (appealed for by James Scott, Wailrari), till January; Thomas James Hawkins, farm hand. Amberley (appealed frr by his employers. It. W. Lochhead), till January; Leslie F. Teague, farmer, .Fornsido (Bl), and Henry Brown, farmer, Omihi, till March; Edward \Read, farmer. Spotswood, and James X. Forrester, farmer, Hawarden (Cl) till February; Thomas Eraser, farmer, Waiau, till May: Usher E. Kelly, farmer, Spotswood; John F. Pilcher, farmer, Wocdgrove, and Percy -F. Symes, farmer, Oust, till March. Tho appeals of Frederick .J. Jenkins, farm hand, Weikuku, and Robert 11. Osborne, Oust., wero allowed, they having been wrongly classed.

The following appeals were dismissed: George H. Cooper, farmer, Kaiapoi, time being allowed till the May draft: Herbert Harper, farmer, Bennetts, who bad recently sold a email farm to purchase a larger property, timo allowed ti! March; James D. M’Mullan, farmer, Kaiapoi. to go with the April draft; John Pavelka, farmer, Oxford (Cl). March draft: Charles A. Mowat, sheepfarmer, Cheviot, April draft. Sine die adjournments were granted in the following cases:—James Gorrio, Motunau, who is employed managing the farms of two soldiers at 'the front, the case to be revised in six months; Daniel E. O’Brien. Waiau, farm manager for Lieutenant Bickerton Fisher, who is at Die front, cast- to be revised in six months; John George- Watson, farm manager for a soldier. Cutveraea (Cl), to bo revised in six inonthe.

Tima was allowed Claude S. Stubbs, farmer, East Oxford (Cl), till the January draft; Edward D. Stancombe, farm hand, Wocdgrove, appealed for bv his employer, Charles E. Mason, till the March draft; William E. Mason, till the March draft; William E. Knight, storekeeper, Ohoka. til! the April draft; William L. Pawsey, farm hand. East Oxford (appealed for by his employer, Charles Evans), till tho March draft/. William John Peters, farm labourer. Hammer Springs, was appealed for bv Henry W. Farrow, farmer. 'Peters stated that he had a Government section of about, two acres and that, in addition to working for appellant, he bred and fattened about TO nigs pel year. H. V. Farrow stated that he hod over SCO acres, and could not do without Peters’s assistance.

The, Chairman: I have a. telegram which states that Prters can be spared, there being a returned soldier ready to take on his farm work.

Peters and Farrow exclaimed in chorus: “Oh, yes, we know who tent the telegram.” They both named a lady resident of the township, and Farrow declared that she was anxious to see Peters out of the way so that she could get the offnl from the hbsnital. •The appeal was dismissed, and Peters was allowed till the March draft. ■ The following being classed CO. their cases were automatically adjourned sine die;—E.
